I used to run a power 650(old school), and then another system with a few punch 150's, then stepped up to the punch 200ix's with the built in x-over cards. Man if RF still made stuff like they used to I would never had strayed.

Comparison Purposes These comparisions are not intended to replace the nostalgia of legendary PUNCH & POWER series amplifiers. Replacing an Old Punch 150 Pages (1): 1 Author Thread Member Replacing an Old Punch 150 Guys, I'm not a stereophile so I'm a little lost. I have a 97 Tahoe that came with a ROckford Fosgate Punch 150 that was used to drive 2 Rockford Fosgate speakers.
The speakers each have a 10 inch woofer a tweeter and a mid-range. The Puch went out and since I'm not into stereos I wanted an exact replacement so I wouldn't have to run different wires or anything like that.
After several months the stereo shop gave up on it. Question: What is the closest replacement?
Since there are probably 100 answers to that, what do I need to look for in the replacement? SInce it is 150W do I just get any 150W amp to replace it?
Any help will be very appreciated. 10:16 AM Member Your in luck! I can set you straight up!!
I still run 2 2nd gen Punch 150's (89). Still going strong to this day!! If you want a exact replacement amp, I have heard the new Rockford Punch P5002, Type RF X2.C/X2.A and Power T5002 is equivalent today. To answer your question, No the 150 is not anywhere near 150w. The Rockford amps from that era were VERY underrated in power output! They 'stated' 75x2 @ 4 ohms, 90x2 @ 2 ohms, 150x1 @ 4 ohms and 180x1 @ 2 ohms. Realistic birthsheet #'s are: 177.3x2!
About 350-450x1! 08:39 PM Member old Punch As it turns out, I was at Best Buy tonight and they had an RF2002 as an open box special so I bought it. Per your post, its probably way too much amp for my speakers, but the guy said if I turned the gain down I should be OK. We will see soon. 08:55 PM Member Just to state, I would say except for the new Rockford amps, the closest amp that I could think of to replace the Rockford vintage old school amps would be the Orion. Back in the day, Orion and Rockford were running head-to-head. A question: I can only assume that since you had it worked on, they did check the 4 tiny 6 amp internal protection fuses if the amp is 1st or 2nd generation.
The 3rd gen was the HD (Hybrid Design) version and did not have the 4 internal fuses. It would almost be a crime if it is not a HD and the internal fuses are blown so you give up on such a powerhouse of a amp! BTW, I can't find the small 6 amp fuses now, so I use 5 amp.
You can find them at a local auto parts store. It is very rare that they blow, but it can happen. So my question is: Does the amp say HD? If it does not, I can tell you how to take it apart and check the 4 internal fuses. 07:10 PM Member RE: quote: Originally posted on by RFVega Your in luck! I can set you straight up!!

Realistic birthsheet #'s are: 177.3x2! About 350-450x1! Those ratings sound a little weird to me, the birthsheet sounds right though.
The old Punch amps doubled output when impedance was cut in half (down to rated stability). To the best of my knowledge the Punch 150 should be 75x2 at 4 ohms stereo, 150x2 at 2 ohms stereo, and 300x1 at 4 ohms mono.
According to the birthsheet it's 177x2 at 2ohms stereo - which is the equivalent of 354x1 at 4 ohms bridged (mono) - which, based on their reputation, sounds about right. 09:50 PM Member RE: RE: quote: Originally posted on by N2Audio Those ratings sound a little weird to me, the birthsheet sounds right though. Those 'ratings' are directly what Rockford stated back in the day. It is very well known that RF rated the vintage old school amps very low and the performance was very high.
Even the RF vintage old school literature states: 'Amplifiers that always perform beyond their specifications'. Just curious: Where did you get 'should be'? BTW, I don't know exactly what that 177.3x2 is at? Just heard it, do not have birthsheet. I have done much research on the Punch 150 in different forums and have heard from others that have used them up to 450-500w Max! You do post about right though 'realistic' #'s, N2.
11:07 PM Member I said - 'To the best of my knowledge'. My knowledge was wrong. Fosgate still has a pdf file of the specs for all the '89 punch amps. The ratings you quoted are right. I guess that makes them even more under-rated than I thought. Even enough to be considered poorly rated. 11:14 PM Member RE: quote: Originally posted on by N2Audio I said - 'To the best of my knowledge'.

The Punch 150 retailed back in the day for $515. I would say I definately got my $ worth!!
Little did I know back then what they would mean today! I just heard they were great kick a$$ amps, so I bought them. I think that might be the reason the Rockford vintage old school amps are so respected and remembered because they were 'rated' VERY low and actually performed VERY high! 11:28 PM Member oh but boy did those old school fosgates pound! A local genius rebuilt my punch 60's and they threw over 800watts rms each 06:26 AM Member RE: quote: Originally posted on by nitestalker oh but boy did those old school fosgates pound! A local genius rebuilt my punch 60's and they threw over 800watts rms each wow, that was about a 100w amp.
Was the local genius' name David Copperfield? 09:02 AM Member NO, HE WENT BY THE NAME ELZIE,and a punch 60 could pull 300watts with ease 07:19 AM Author Thread Pages (1): 1 Recently Logged In Members.
